Memorial Day: From the Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Posted on Friday, May 23, 2019 - 01:03 PM EST

Memorial Day is our most solemn national holiday. It is a unique time for both celebration and poignant remembrances. We celebrate our freedom and way of life through backyard barbeques, ballgames, and beach outings. But, we also pause to remember our Fallen in ceremonies mourning the loss of those who gave their lives so that we might live ours in peace and freedom.  At its core, the eloquence of Memorial Day speaks of personal sacrifice for a greater, common good. It resonates in the stories of ordinary Americans, who fought and died, drawing on extraordinary inner strength and determination to preserve our Nation. They did so out of an abiding sense of duty and immense personal courage.

After 38 years in The Army, I am now honored and privileged to serve as your Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA).  VA remains committed to providing the high quality benefits you have earned and deserve.
Allegations of VA employees misconduct have surfaced over the last several weeks, beginning with scheduling delays at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. As I testified before Congress on May 15, I take any allegations about patient safety or employee misconduct very seriously.

Universal Headwear - False Rumors
Posted on Friday, October 25, 2019 - 09:20 AM EST
MC Related
FROM:  Headquarters Marine Corps, Public Affairs
ISSUE:  Uniform Board #213 (Universal Headwear) Media Reporting

BACKGROUND: DoD (DoN) charged the Corps (and other services) with looking into universal headwear.  Last week, the uniform board sent out a survey, through the chain of command, that sought the opinion of Marines on universal covers, multiple braids for females and Supplemental Allowance Changes.  Someone leaked/provided the survey to the NY post and the post subsequently queried our press section yesterday afternoon on the universal cover.  Upon consulting with the uniform board, we provided the following
answer:
"There is currently an ongoing survey underway asking Marines about their preferences on which type of cover they prefer. The results of the survey will assist the uniform board in making the final decision."  This morning a sensational story tying the decision directly to the POTUS ran in the NY Post (attached).  Other outlets like Fox News and Vanity Fair reported that the Marine Corps is changing the cover and that it may cost $8 million.  I
notified Fox of the facts to correct the record.   On our twitter handles,
we reiterated that the project was in the examination stages and being considered.  Also notified OSD PA of our actions.

DISCUSSION: Media interest in this topic is much higher than anticipated.
Because it involves conflict, prominence, sex, oddity, and suspense - it sells advertising. Many media outlets are simply reporting the NY Post story while others are asking DivPA for additional information. This issue has taken a political tone as the Post reported that President Obama was somehow the root cause of the change. We continue to press with the following statement in subsequent queries:  "The Marine Corps conducts, on average, quarterly assessments of uniform standards and provides their recommendations to the commandant of the Marine Corps for final approval.
The aim of the Marine Corps Uniform Board is to balance the individual Marine's need for 'best value' clothing in terms of practicality, quality and cost within realistic supply, support and fiscal constraints to ensure the Marine Corps maintains functional, traditional and distinctive uniforms.
We are currently assessing the utility of a universal cover that men and women Marines can wear. Personal opinion surveys for active duty and reserve Marines are in progress and we expect a decision to be made next month."

RECOMMENDATION: Aggressively disseminate 3 key facts:

1. The President in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover.

2. We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding reason:  the former manufacturer went out of business.

3. The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.

Please disseminate information as widely as possible.

Six Marine four-star generals confer in the historic "Home of the Commandants" in Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2013.

It is historical that there are six four star Generals in the USMC.  However, that number is dwindling again and may be back to four as of June of this year when General Mattis retires.

According to General James Mattis, It was a bunch of friends who started out as second lieutenants. We never thought we would end up as four stars. It is the surprise and twists and turns of life.
